When I searched for rutin in skin care products, in spite of its impressive profile in skincare, I only found it in a small number of products. What is rutin?
Rutin is considered a type of phytochemical known as a flavonoid. Flavonoids are considered polyphenols from plants that are known to protect our cells from oxidative damage or stress. Rutin has a wide range of benefits from antioxidants, anticancer, protecting nerves from damage and degeneration, and cardioprotective.
Rutin can be found in buckwheat as well as asparagus, figs, plums, unpeeled apples, cherries, and tea.

Does rutin have any benefits for skin care?
Rutin applied topically to the hand prior to UVB exposure in a study showed that rutin decreased the impact of UVB on the skin by reducing the development of inflammatory mediators that could damage the DNA of cells.
Another study evaluating the SPF of a 10% rutin emulsion found its effects to be similar to homosalate, a common sunscreen additive. This same study demonstrated that rutin offered some UVA protection and improved the SPF of a titanium product.
A really interesting study evaluating the effects of adding rutin to a sunscreen formulation showed that the 0.1% rutin concentration increased the SPF by 70% and reduced the impact of UV damage in terms of oxidative stress on our cells by 40%.
Does rutin offer any other benefits to the skin?
A study looking at the effects of topical rutin on atopic dermatitis and allergic contact dermatitis showed that rutin actually inhibited allergic contact dermatitis and atopic dermatitis. Rutin decreased the infiltration of histamine-producing cells called mast cells from infiltrating the skin and showed lower histamine levels in the bloodstream and lower levels of inflammatory mediators.
Another study looked at the effects of oral rutin on collagen in diabetic patients. Diabetes has been shown to accelerate the signs of aging. In diabetic patients taking oral rutin, a decrease in the acceleration of collagen changes associated with diabetes was noted.
Can rutin be used as an anti-aging skincare ingredient?
A study was performed looking at the impact of rutin applied topically for 4 weeks on several parameters of skin aging. These included the visual gauges of skin aging such as number of wrinkles, length of wrinkles, and area covered by wrinkles as well as skin elasticity. Biological markers of oxidative stress on cells were also evaluated as well as genetic expression of collagen precursors. Rutin demonstrated a benefit to skin aging with each of these measures with an increase in skin elasticity and a decrease in the number, size, and area of wrinkles as well as increased markers for collagen production.
